Welcome to the Rhode Island Vegan Dining Guide, the most comprehensive and up to date listing of truly vegan friendly dining options in Rhode Island.  This list will always be a work in progress and is not complete or perfect ~ we hope it will continually grow.  We are open to suggestions and additions; please do not feel slighted if we do not add or implement your suggestions. We will not add a listing without checking it out for ourselves.  Our goal is not to endorse or review restaurants, but to simply list places that “get it” – restaurants that make the extra effort to make vegetarians feel like they have a choice and are welcome.  The list features places with separate vegetarian/vegan menus, menus with more than one clearly marked vegan item or offer vegan specials.  So, places that offer the token pasta primavera, salad, veggie burger, or portabella sandwich are not going to make it to this list.  This is the 21^st century.  Vegetarians/Vegans should not be an afterthought ~ we do not live on lettuce, pasta, frozen burgers and mushrooms.  Many places say they will change ingredients or whip something up for a vegetarian – this is great, but again will not make the cut. 

A few places, specifically Middle Eastern restaurants are included, even though they do not necessarily promote themselves as veg friendly.  With that being said, we will not list every corner pizza or Chinese place in the state – only the ones that go out of their way to accommodate vegans.  Sorry to say, but the reason some of the popular places with the RI veg crowd are not listed here is because they aren't as veg friendly as you think.  Many things you may think of as being vegetarian are not even close to being vegetarian.  Tomato sauce (even Marinara) sometimes has cheese mixed in and occasionally has chicken, veal or beef broth.  Chinese & Thai restaurants very often have meat broth, oyster sauce and shrimp paste in their food – even if the item is on the “vegetarian menu.”    Note that most Asian restaurants feature a "vegetable" menu section, not a "vegetarian" menu section. The curators of this page are long time vegans and committed to making life easier for our fellow vegetarians while supporting local vegan friendly establishments.
